Optimized Return Belt Conveyor Idlers: Ensuring Centralization, Reducing Wear, and Adapting to Harsh Conditions

Return belt conveyor idlers are primary troughing sets having the function of supporting the empty belt on its return section and therefore maintaining belt centralization.

Rulmeca engineered configuration consists of one or two rollers set in a “V” formation at 10° angles. Also, different arrangements can be selected according to specific application requirements: fixed sets with plain steel rollers or spacer rings; suspended garland sets with plain rollers and rings.

The decision involves considering several factors. In particular, accurately defining belt width in relation to material flow and determining appropriate speed are crucial steps in selecting the correct transom support and roller series. Also, special attention should be given to the most corrosive environments or abrasive transported materials. In the event, not only galvanization treatments should be applied to transoms. Even rollers should be designed to withstand harsh conditions and prevent buildup accumulation. Indeed, since return rollers come into contact with the dirty belt side, residual material can deposit unevenly on them, leading to belt misalignment and premature wear. In such conditions, using Rulmeca return rollers with rubber rings can help to limit material adhesion. Another recommended way to mitigate this issue, basically suitable for long conveyor systems, is belt inversion over 180 °after the drive drum and before the return drum. Thus, return rollers no longer come into contact with the carrying upper strand of the belt where material buildup accumulates.

With regard to long conveyors, another design specification is recommended. For conveyors exceeding 300 meters in length, a double return set helps to keep belt alignment. However, sometimes it can be necessary to correct belt tracking using self-centering troughing sets even on the return section.

Main features
V-Return Transoms Sets for Long and Critical Conveyors

Rulmeca’s V-return transom sets are designed specifically for long or critical conveyors that require precise belt management and consistent performance. These sets are engineered to provide optimal support for the return section of the belt, ensuring its stability and centralization over extended distances. The V-shaped configuration helps prevent belt misalignment, reducing the risk of wear, and is ideal for conveyors where traditional support methods may fall short. These robust transoms offer a high level of reliability and performance even in the most demanding applications

Self-Aligning Belt Effect, Even on Reversible Conveyors

Rulmeca’s self-aligning return idlers ensure that the conveyor belt remains centered throughout its entire length, even in reversible conveyor systems. This feature is particularly important for systems where the belt direction may change during operation. By automatically adjusting to any belt misalignment, the self-aligning mechanism minimizes wear and tear on the belt and other components. The system ensures consistent performance in both directions, improving the longevity of the conveyor and reducing maintenance costs in challenging operational conditions

Robust and Very Safe, Preserving Belt Centering and Integrity

Rulmeca return transoms are built with high-strength materials and a robust design to ensure maximum safety and durability. Their primary function is to preserve the integrity of the conveyor belt by maintaining consistent centering, even in the harshest environments. The construction of these transoms helps protect the belt from premature wear caused by misalignment, while also improving the overall safety of the system. Their high load-bearing capacity and resilience to external factors like temperature and corrosive materials make them ideal for use in long conveyors or critical applications where belt integrity is paramount
