The sugar refinery Anklam is considered one of the best and most forward thinking sugar refineries in Europe.

For the syrup and sugar extraction the refinery uses sugar beet from over 400 farmers within the region. Each day the company handles more than 11.000 t beets with which it produces 800 t sugar and 2.000 t syrup every day.
The sugar beet campaign means that the main period of the beet handling is from September until January. In this time the sugar beet will be delivered to the dry storage every day. From the storage the beets travel by belt conveyor through the washer to the refinery. Here the beets will be handled in some steps. First of all the beets get washed and separated from cabbage and other constituents. The next step is the extraction whereby the beets will be hackled and in the composition with water at 72°C, the cell walls compartmentalize. Through diffusion the sugar beet sap will be extracted. In the third part the beet sap clarifies with calcium carbonate and as the water vaporizes, the syrup arises.
This syrup will be used for production of ethanol or will be stored for later fabrication of white refined sugar.
“The conditions for the rollers are very difficult, because with the beet there is also a lot of mud and sand on the conveyor belt. When it comes into contact with water it can easily start caking and binding.” Mr. Kerlikowsky tells us, the purchasing manager at the sugar refinery in Anklam.
